Check the Current Data Directory Location
There may be times that you may need to access your HomeGauge files that are located in the HomeGauge Data folder. Below are the steps to find what the current file path is for your HomeGauge data folder.
Recommended Method:
Open the software and go to File > Open Data Folder
Check the file path located in the address bar of the Windows File Explorer Window.
Legacy Method:
With HomeGauge software open, click Options > Advanced Folder Option.
HomeGauge will prompt you to close the current report. Click Yes.
Read the Current Data Directory, which is usually C:\Users\[Windows Account Name]\appdata\local\HomeGauge
Note: appdata is a hidden folder. In order for this folder to be shown, you'll need to enable hidden folders in the View tab of your Windows File Explorer.
Change the Data Folder Location
IMPORTANT! Changing the file path in the software is not the same as moving the documents. The file path refers to the location that the software looks for (or "is pointed at") the HomeGauge Data Folder. To ensure that you are able to access your files, make sure that your HomeGauge Data folder is located in the same location as the file path set in HomeGauge Desktop Software.
Below are the steps to find, copy, and paste your HomeGauge data folder to a new location.
Close HomeGauge and open File Explorer.
Navigate to the location of your HomeGauge data folder (If you are unsure how to find it, follow the instructions here ).
Right-click the HomeGauge folder and choose Copy.
Note: We recommend Copy over Cut because if something goes wrong, the original files are still in the original location.
Navigate to the location you would like to paste the HomeGauge folder.
Note: We do not recommend storing the data folder in a cloud-based repository (OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox, etc.), since network sync issues can interfere with uploads to the Dashboard.
Right-click empty space in the window and choose Paste.
Open the HomeGauge Desktop Software and click Options > Advanced Folder Options.
HomeGauge will prompt you to close the current report. Click Yes.
Click Change Data Directory to open the Select Folder window.
Navigate to the new HomeGauge folder location.
Click the HomeGauge folder to highlight it in blue and then click OK at the bottom.
HomeGauge will open a warning Window. Type YES in the box and click OK to proceed.
Close then re-open HomeGauge software.
Tip: Once you have confirmed that HomeGauge is working like normal, you can remove the HomeGauge folder in the original location in order to prevent storing duplicates of the HomeGauge Files.
FAQs
Why would I move the Data Folder?
Moving the data folder from the default location may be necessary for advanced users based on hard drive configuration and capacity as well as mitigating issues caused by third party cloud backup software.
How did my Data Folder get moved without my knowledge?
Third party cloud storage software has been known to relocate files into a cloud-based repository in order to save space on your computer, however this causes issues for the HomeGauge software which needs to be able to access the files in the Data Folder.
To correct this issue you should:
Locate the data folder. Most likely it will be in a folder created by your cloud storage provider.
Make sure that the Files are downloaded to your computer. Different cloud storage services will have different methods of showing this information. For One Drive:
Right Click on the HomeGauge Folder and look for "Always Keep on this computer"
Wait for the files to be downloaded from the cloud
Follow the instructions to change the Data Folder Location.
