Having trouble with photos, video, or voice-to-text in HomeGauge’s Desktop Report Writer? Here's a breakdown of the most common issues—plus how to fix them.
Error: Failed to convert video
Occurs when: video is in a different format than .mp4 format. Specific camera devices like iPhones use HEVC or .3gp format.
Why it happens: If your computer does not have the correct codec, Windows cannot convert the video to the .mp4 format that Desktop Report Writer uses.
Solutions:
Download Microsoft Codec
1. Click the following link to download the Microsoft video converter on your computer:
https://www.microsoft.com/store/productid/9NMZLZ57R3T7?ocid=pdpshare
2. Download the affected report from the cloud again and the videos will convert correctly.
3. All future videos will convert normally.
Error: Out Of Memory
Occurs when: Adding an image or video to the report
Why it happens: The media being added is too large and the software is unable to convert it. It can also occur after adding many media files simultaneously.
Solutions:
Restart the software or decrease the file size of added media
Save your report, then close the software.
Open the software and try to add your media again.
If the issue persists, consider editing your media file with photo or video editing software to make it smaller.

Photos Appear Black When Dragged from Filmstrip
Possible Causes & Solutions:
1. Live Photos (iOS)
Apple’s Live Photo mode creates a video clip with each photo, which can confuse the software.
Fix:
Check the photo folder for .MOV or video files.
Remove video clips, leaving only .JPG or .PNG images.
Re-open HomeGauge and drag the photos again.

2. HEIC Format (iOS)
Fix for current images:
Convert images to .JPG using:
MS Paint: Open a single image, click File > Save As > JPEG picture
Use an online batch converter to convert multiple files
Fix for future images:
On your iOS device, go to Settings > Camera > Formats, and choose Most Compatible to save future photos as JPG.
3. Photos on an SD Card
HomeGauge may have trouble accessing photos directly from SD cards or cameras.
Fix:
Copy the photos to your computer’s hard drive. Then restart HomeGauge and point the filmstrip to the new location.

Fix Option 2:
After adding your photos, go to Report > Show Photo Locker.
Press Ctrl + A to select all photos.
