Choosing the Right Mobile Device

Consider these factors when purchasing a device for field use with HomeGauge Companion:

Weight and Size

  • Lighter devices are easier to carry during long inspections. Balance weight against screen size and battery life based on personal preference.

Screen Brightness

  • Choose a high-brightness display for outdoor readability. This makes it easier to view your screen in direct sunlight during exterior inspections.

Battery Life

  • Look for long battery life to last through multiple inspections without recharging.

  • Consider a device with a replaceable battery or carry a portable power bank for extended days.

Camera and Flash

  • Ensure the device has a rear-facing camera with a flash. Many tablets do not include a flash, which is essential for capturing clear photos in dark spaces such as crawlspaces, attics, and basements.

Internet Connectivity

  • A fast Wi-Fi connection is essential for uploading reports after inspections. If you need mobile data at job sites, consider a 5G LTE-capable device, but monitor data usage carefully. You can restrict uploads to Wi-Fi only in the HomeGauge Companion app settings.

Microphone

  • A microphone is required for text-to-speech features. Confirm your device has a built-in microphone, especially if purchasing a tablet, as not all tablet models include one.

Recommended Brands

HomeGauge tests Companion on Samsung and Google Pixel devices. These are the recommended options for the most reliable experience.

Note: New device models are released before HomeGauge can test them. While newer devices are not discouraged, potential issues may arise that cannot be resolved immediately.
