Release Notes: Desktop Software 5.6.3

10/07/2026

What's New

Line styles for photo annotations
Lines, circles, and rectangles in the Photo Editor no longer have to be solid. Choose dashed, dotted, dash-dot, or dash-dot-dot. Set a default for each shape under

Picture Edit Defaults → Line Type, or change the style of an existing annotation with the new Type control (below Border) in the editor. The line type is kept when you change the color, width, angle, or size of the shape.

Rotate circles and rectangles
The Angle control in the Photo Editor now works for circles and rectangles, so you can tilt a shape to highlight diagonal cracks and other off-angle defects. Rotated shapes can still be selected, moved, and resized with the corner handles.

Line type defaults in the Drawing Editor
The Drawing Editor Defaults dialog now lets you set a default line type for lines, circles, and rectangles, matching the option already available in the drawing editor itself.

Consistent filtering across the software
"Search" has been renamed Filter throughout, and every filter now works the same way: type in the Filter box and the list shows only matching items; clear the box to see everything again. Most filters include a Match Case option. When nothing matches, the dialog says so instead of showing an empty list. The per-dialog changes are listed under Improvements.

Improvements

Filtering

All Comments dialog
The Filter item in the left-hand tree, and the separate popup it opened, have been removed. Filter controls now sit directly above the comments grid, with Match Case and Match whole word only options. A new All Comments item at the top of the tree lets you switch between one category and the full list. The filter now matches on both the comment Name and the Comment Text (previously only Comment Text).

Comments dialog
Search is now Filter, and the toolbar buttons behave consistently while a filter is active.

All Smart Text dialog
Search is now Filter with a Match Case option. Filtering shows every matching Smart Text word instead of jumping to the first entry that starts with your text.

Text Replacement dialog
A Filter box and Match Case checkbox have been added above the Text Fragments grid, and the explanatory text at the top of the dialog is clearer about how it works.

Contacts pane
Search is now Filter with a Match Case option, and it matches across first name, last name, and company at once instead of only the column you are sorted by.

Report Open dialog
Search is now Filter and shows only the reports that match. The Next button has been removed since it is no longer needed.

Merge Report and Report Upload/Download dialogs
Both dialogs gain a column selector, Filter box, and Match Case checkbox, matching the Report Open dialog.

How toolbar buttons behave with a filter active
Add, Paste, and Edit keep the filter if the new or edited item matches it; otherwise the filter clears so the item is visible and selected. Delete and Cut keep the filter and select the next visible item. Move Up/Down and Sort stay disabled while filtering, as before.

Report lists

State shown with the city
The Report Open, Merge Report, Report Upload/Download, and Appointment Download dialogs now show the state alongside the city, for example "Asheville, NC". Names no longer show a stray comma when the first or last name is blank.

Appointment Download column widths are saved
Custom column widths in the Appointment Download dialog are now saved and restored correctly between sessions.

Photos

Stay in place when deleting photos
Deleting one of several photos in General Info, an Inspection Item, or a Section Overview no longer jumps you back to the first photo. Delete photo 2 of 5 and you stay on the new photo 2 of 4; delete the last photo and you land on the new last photo.

Font previews in the Photo Editor text tool
The font list now shows a sample of each font next to its name. The list is limited to TrueType fonts, which are the only ones that rendered correctly, and the dropdown scrollbar now displays properly in Dark Mode.

Bug Fixes

Fixed a crash when checking for updates
A rare timing issue could crash the software while it connected to the server to download a new version.

More reliable update downloads
A network error during an update download could leave the progress window on screen and block the rest of the application. That no longer happens, and temporary download files are now cleaned up after both successful and failed downloads.

Fixed a crash when adding photos to itemized inspection items
Inserting a photo from the Picture pane could crash the software after switching between inspection items with different numbers of itemized entries.

Editor right-click menu now enables and checks items correctly
In the text editors (General Info intro text, Inspection Item comments, Overview header and footer, and others), Cut and Copy are now grayed out when no text is selected, Paste when the clipboard is empty, and Undo when there is nothing to undo. Bold, Italic, and Underline now show the correct checked state for the selected text.

Fixed photo display corruption when moving the splitter
Dragging the vertical splitter between the comment and photo panes could corrupt the photo or draw only part of it. Photos now redraw correctly.

Before You Update

  • One-time database refresh. The first time you open this version, HomeGauge refreshes your reports database to add state information to the report lists. This runs once and may take a moment on large report folders.

  • All Comments filter has moved. The Filter item in the left-hand tree is gone. Use the Filter box above the comments grid instead.

  • Photo Editor fonts. Older non-TrueType fonts such as Courier and FixedSys no longer appear in the text tool's font list. Text in those fonts never displayed correctly in the editor.
