How do I transfer a report from my Android device without using the cloud?

We recommend using the HG Cloud for moving data back and forth between Android and Windows devices because it just works.

Sometimes the cloud doesn't work for you though. If your report size is too large or your internet isn't working correctly, use the following steps to manually transfer your report:

It basically boils down to copying files and folders and putting them in the correct place for the HomeGauge software to be able to see them. Here is a partial list of ways of copying files back and forth:

  • Connect the Android device using a USB cable
    1. Connect your Android phone to your computer using the microUSB to USB cable.
    2. If you are using a PC, you will see an installation bubble pop up in the bottom right of your screen. Wait for the computer to successfully complete installation.
    3. The critical step: On your Android phone, pull down the notification window (aka ‘window shade’) and tap USB Connected or Charge Via USB.
    4. Select "Transferring Media Files"
  • Take the SD card out of the Android device and insert it into the desktop
  • Use a cloud disk drive like Dropbox.com

HomeGauge and the HG Companion both store the templates and reports in the same folder structure. All folders are below the main HomeGauge data folder.

HomeGauge:
The default location is C:\Users\*yourname*\Documents\HomeGauge. To find the location you can go to the menu "Options -> Advanced Folder Option" and see it displayed in the dialog.

HG Companion:
The default location is /mnt/sdcard/HomeGauge, but can vary depending on the device. To find the location you can go to the menu "Options -> HomeGauge Data Folder".

Once you have the main HomeGauge folder, there are two sub folders called "Reports" and "Templates". Both of the these folder have sub folders. Each template is stored in one whole file with the extension "*.ht5". Templates are also stored in other folders like "Templates/Residential" for organization. Each report is stored in its own folder under the Reports folder, which are either names with the next sequential number like (0000458) or are named using the Report ID. Using the Report ID field is very helpful in moving reports.

To move a template from HomeGauge to HomeGauge Companion:

  1. Find the template you want to move from HomeGauge to HG Companion.
  2. Copy the template file into the template folder on the HG Companion. There are many ways to copy a file and we do not support this. See the list above for the many different ways to copy files from one place to the other.

More hints and tips:

  • Disconnect the USB connection as the drive is unreadable by Android when it is mounted to the desktop.
  • Be sure to save the report before moving files underneath the software.
  • After moving a report to the desktop you will need to use the "Refresh Database" button on the open report screen.

Remember, the HG Cloud is one click and it just works. There are many benefits of HG Services and the cloud is just one more reason why your company should use HG Services!
